How much do private equity CEOS make?
As of Apr 5, 2024, the average annual pay for a Private Equity Ceo in the United States is $82,146 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $39.49 an hour. This is the equivalent of $1,579/week or $6,845/month.
The base salary is lower than for public company CEOs, typically around $1 million vs. $1.2 million, and bonuses are tied to clear, aggressive goals. If a CEO doesn't reach them, there is no bonus. But the CEO also gets a large grant of stock options, typically representing 2% to 3% of the company's total equity.
By company size, base, bonus, and total cash compensation all rise as revenue does, with total average cash compensation coming in at $1,427,000 at companies with revenue above $500 million. By industry, CEOs in the consumer industry are paid the most, at $1,050,000 in average total cash compensation.
Salaries Levels by Venture Funding Raised
In 2022, chief executives at early-stage companies that have raised over $10 million in financing were paid just under two hundred thousand dollars a year, $199,000.
Annual Salary | Weekly Pay | |
---|---|---|
Top Earners | $241,298 | $4,640 |
75th Percentile | $187,500 | $3,605 |
Average | $143,004 | $2,750 |
25th Percentile | $113,500 | $2,182 |
$50M to $150M
We found the lowest salary in this category to be $235,000. The highest salary for a CEO in a company with between $50M and $150M in revenue is $500,000. Of the participants in this category, the median salary is $300,000.
US CEO compensation
By company size, base, bonus, and total cash compensation all rise as revenue does, with total median cash compensation coming in at $1,639,000 at companies with revenue above $1 billion. By industry, CEOs at financial services firms are paid the most: $1,013,000 in median total cash compensation.
The highest-paid CEOs aren't always the ones running the biggest companies. The chief executives of Hertz, Peloton and Pinterest all earned more than $100 million in 2022, topping almost every CEO in the S&P 500 including Apple's Tim Cook, who made $99 million.
There is no definitive answer to this question as the salary of a CEO can vary greatly depending on the size and type of company they are running. However, a CEO of a 40 million dollar company would likely make an annual salary in the range of 300,000 to 500,000 dollars.
In 2021, Elon Musk received the highest compensation till date as a CEO. This compensation was a mix of salary from the company and stock options awarded to him by the company. This showed the importance of a CEO to the rest of the world. Let us take a look at the top 10 highest paid CEOs in the US.
Who is the lowest paid CEO?
Dozens of CEOs have pay packages that range into the tens of millions of dollars. The lowest-paid CEO in America, however, is also one of the world's richest men: Warren Buffet. America does have a tradition of the $1 CEO. Steve Jobs was paid only $1 each year from 1997 through 2011.
In the past 10 years, CEO pay at S&P 500 companies increased by more than $5 million to an average of $16.7 million in 2022. Meanwhile, the average U.S. worker saw a wage increase of $15,460 over the past decade, earning on average just $61,900 in 2022. Blackstone Inc.
Instances of alternative compensation
For example, in 2010–11 Oracle's founder and CEO Larry Ellison made only $1 in salary, but earned over $77 million in other forms of compensation. In some cases, in lieu of a salary, the executives receive stock options.
Highest salary that a Private Equity Associate can earn is ₹45.0 Lakhs per year (₹3.8L per month). How does Private Equity Associate Salary in India change with experience? An Entry Level Private Equity Associate with less than three years of experience earns an average salary of ₹14.6 Lakhs per year.
Is it hard to get hired at BlackRock? Glassdoor users rated their interview experience at BlackRock as 61.2% positive with a difficulty rating score of 2.97 out of 5 (where 5 is the highest level of difficulty).
Private Equity Managing Director Salary + Bonus: Compensation here is highly variable, but a reasonable range is $700K to $2 million, with slightly less than half from the base salary. “Senior Partners” will earn more if the firm makes the distinction.
The CEO at the top of the list, Elon Musk, earned almost $81,000 in every minute of the 40-hour workweek in 2021. The table below highlights 12 highly compensated top CEOs in 2021, along with where they work and how much they get paid (figures for 2022 are expected to be released in August).
PAY RANK | CEO | COMPANY |
---|---|---|
1 | Sundar Pichai | Alphabet (GOOG) |
2 | Michael Rapino | Live Nation Entertainment (LYV) |
3 | Tim D. Cook | Apple (AAPL) |
4 | Peter Zaffino | American International Group (AIG) |
Their salaries are astronomically different. CEO's make hundreds of millions of dollars annually; the President makes just under a half million a year. But their responsibilities are vastly different.
Meta in its 2022 proxy statement said that Zuckerberg's base salary remained at $1, the same as in 2021 and 2020. And in 2022 too he did not receive any bonus or stock awards.
Why are CEOs paid millions?
While the factors influencing CEO compensation are complex and multifaceted, it's clear that a combination of company performance, industry norms, talent scarcity, and market dynamics is the answer to why CEOs get paid so much money.
Quit Your Day Job
Still, median CEO tenure is 4.9 to 6.5 years, so even the top job probably won't make you a billionaire. If you want to become a billionaire, you have to be at least a partial owner of a very large company. Ideally, you should start that company, and hold on to a large chunk of shares as it grows.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, has a monthly salary of approximately $166,666. This is based on his annual salary of $2 million. In addition to his salary, Pichai also receives a variety of other benefits, including stock options, a bonus, and a housing allowance.
Their salary would be set by the board of directors. If the CEO is also the founder and the 100% owner, then, s/he could set his/her own salary. But it is sort of moot because s/he owns what is left in the company, including any salary s/he didn't take. If they own a lot of the organization, then yes, of course.
Top earners
The highest-paid CEO of an S&P 500 company in 2021 was Expedia Group Inc.'s Peter Maxwell Kern, whose total adjusted compensation added up to $296.2 million, which was 2,897 times greater than the median salary of one of his employees.
