Does age affect credit score?
Credit age matters, but other factors matter more
The process is an ID check and not a credit check. If you have signed up to a credit reporting service, such as Experian, you may receive a notification that a check has been made against your credit record. However, any check conducted by an age verification service will not impact your credit score in any way.
According to credit bureau Experian, a good credit score is 700 or above. But if you're in your 20s and just starting out, a score of 700 or higher may be tough as you're just establishing your credit history.
Following NerdWallet's general guidelines, a good credit score is within the 690 to 719 range on the standard 300-850 scale, regardless of age.
A 780 credit score is Very Good, but it can be even better. If you can elevate your score into the Exceptional range (800-850), you could become eligible for the very best lending terms, including the lowest interest rates and fees, and the most enticing credit-card rewards programs.
Average FICO® Score By Age Group In 2022 | |
---|---|
Generation Z (18 – 25) | 679 |
Millennials (26 – 41) | 687 |
Generation X (42 – 57) | 706 |
Baby Boomers (58 – 76) | 742 |
- Don't Cancel Your Credit Cards. Resist the urge to cancel old credit cards, even if you no longer use them. ...
- Make sure your accounts stay active. ...
- Start building your credit history now. ...
- Opening multiple credit cards. ...
- Closing credit cards unnecessarily.
As a parent or legal guardian, you have a right to see copies of your teen's credit files. But to gain access to the report, you'll need to provide the credit reporting agencies with proof of your identity and your relationship to your student. This can be a bit of a hassle, but it's an important safeguard.
The card issuer may also ask about your age so they know you are old enough to have the legal ability to enter into a contract. Also, the card issuer may ask for your social security number to get your credit report.
As someone with a 650 credit score, you are firmly in the “fair” territory of credit. You can usually qualify for financial products like a mortgage or car loan, but you will likely pay higher interest rates than someone with a better credit score. The "good" credit range starts at 690.
Does anyone have an 850 credit score?
Only 1.31% of Americans with a FICO® Score have a perfect 850 credit score. While a score this high is rare among any demographic, older generations are more likely to have perfect credit. Baby boomers make up a whopping 59.4% of the people with an 850 credit score.
A 750 credit score is often considered very good — or even excellent. A very good or excellent credit score can mean you're more likely to be approved for good offers and rates when it comes to mortgages, auto loans and credit cards with rewards and other perks.
How rare is an 800 credit score? An 800 credit score is not as rare as most people think, considering that roughly 23% of adults have a credit score in the 800-850 range, according to data from FICO. A score in this range allows consumers to access the best credit card offers and loans with the most favorable terms.
Highlights: While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
Baby boomers (ages 58 to 76) with 800-plus scores have an average utilization ratio of 6.3%, while all baby boomer cardholders have an average utilization ratio of 14.3%. The silent generation (ages 77 and older) with 800-plus scores have an average utilization ratio of 4.6%.
Credit Score | Tier | Percentage of Americans |
---|---|---|
720 – 850 | Excellent | 38.12% |
660 – 719 | Good | 17.33% |
620 – 659 | Fair/Limited | 13.47% |
300 – 619 | Bad | 31.08% |
It's recommended you have a credit score of 620 or higher when you apply for a conventional loan. If your score is below 620, lenders either won't be able to approve your loan or may be required to offer you a higher interest rate, which can result in higher monthly mortgage payments.
Less than 2% of Americans have a perfect credit score.
“If you're at 760, or 780, you're already getting the best you can get,” Jim Droske, president of the credit counseling company Illinois Credit Services, said. “You're already hitting that pinnacle of what lenders care about. Anything above that is just pride.”
In the U.S., the average credit score is 716, per Experian's latest data from the second quarter of 2023. And when you break down the average credit score by age, the typical American is hovering near or above that score.
Your credit score is a major factor in whether you'll be approved for a car loan. Some lenders use specialized credit scores, such as a FICO Auto Score. In general, you'll need at least prime credit, meaning a credit score of 661 or up, to get a loan at a good interest rate.
What credit score is needed to buy a car?
The credit score required and other eligibility factors for buying a car vary by lender and loan terms. Still, you typically need a good credit score of 661 or higher to qualify for an auto loan. About 69% of retail vehicle financing is for borrowers with credit scores of 661 or higher, according to Experian.
Most negative items should automatically fall off your credit reports seven years from the date of your first missed payment, at which point your credit score may start rising. But if you are otherwise using credit responsibly, your score may rebound to its starting point within three months to six years.
Generally speaking, negative information such as late or missed payments, accounts that have been sent to collection agencies, accounts not being paid as agreed, or bankruptcies stays on credit reports for approximately seven years.
Anything less than two years is considered a short credit history. Once you have established between two and four years of credit, lenders will better understand how well you manage your credit accounts. A credit age of five years will raise your score as long as you've been managing your accounts well.
Should you request a security freeze be placed on your minor dependent's credit report, a credit report is created for the minor and then frozen. You'll also need to complete this form and provide proof of your identity; proof of their identity; and proof that you are their parent or legal guardian.
