The Butler Act is best known today as being the law challenged by John T. Scopes and the American Civil Liberties Union that prohibited teaching evolution in the state of Tennessee; the trial, known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, was designed to attract intense national publicity onto Dayton, Tennessee, and the act itself. high-profile lawyers William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow were the prosecuting and defense attorneys. While Scopes was found guilty, the verdict was overturned on a technicality.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic Telegrams; I Got A Beef With You; Playing With Movie Dolls; Travel & Tourism; One Letter Says It All; Animal Planet)

Five incorrect responses, including on the Daily Double by Shira, meant that nobody really gained a foothold early. Through 15 clues, Shira and Benjamin both had $1,200, while Adriana had $1,000.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Shira 3 correct 2 incorrect
Benjamin 4 correct 1 incorrect
Adriana 4 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Shira worked on one of Michelle Obama’s books.
Benjamin recently made his Broadway debut as a producer.
Adriana tried out for the Teen Tournament many years ago.

Adriana definitely had the run of the buzzer in the second half of the round, picking up 8 correct responses to jump into a lead through 30 clues.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Adriana 12 correct 2 incorrect
Shira 6 correct 2 incorrect
Benjamin 7 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Adriana $4,800
Shira $3,000
Benjamin $2,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: 4-Letter World Cities; Hard Stuff; Women In The Bible; Music Of The ’60s; Literary Terms; Double “R” Words)

Double Jeopardy opened with Benjamin doubling up through DD2, and then a very long while before DD3 came out. Shira made a conservative bet that looked like it aimed to keep her in contention regardless going into Final, but an incorrect response and some correct responses on the last four clues from Adriana were enough to give Adriana another runaway going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Adriana 26 correct 3 incorrect
Shira 13 correct 3 incorrect
Benjamin 11 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 18 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Adriana $18,800
Shira $8,900
Benjamin $8,000

Adriana was the only player correct in Final, putting a punctuation mark on win #7; she’ll go for #8 tomorrow!

Tonight’s results:

Benjamin $8,000 – $901 = $7,099 (What is …?)
Shira $8,900 – $2,900 = $6,000 (What is drinking alcohol?)
Adriana $18,800 + $800 = $19,600 (What is teaching evolution?) (7-day total: $155,700)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Theres’s a big difference between “playing to win” and “playing not to lose”; because second/third place is a more difficult betting scenario, it’s so much more important to be playing from the lead. Give your opponents the tougher betting scenario!
  • To give a concrete example from today’s game: I would have gone nearly all in from Shira’s position on DD3, for two reasons: one, if I’m correct, I’m now leading going into Final Jeopardy; two, if I’m not, I’ve become memorable in the eyes of the fans and the producers—and it means that I’m probably returning for Second Chance next winter.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Adriana $18,800 Shira $8,900 Benjamin $8,000)

Adriana: Bet no more tha $999. (Actual bet: $800)

Benjamin: I would bet somewhere close to $6,200 here; it should still win if Shira makes a cover bet and is incorrect, and defends against a lot of random numbers she might choose to bet as well. (Actual bet: $901)

Shira: Standard cover bet over Benjamin is $7,101. However, because Adriana’s runaway margin is so small, you might as well go all in here—just in case she makes a math error. (Actual bet: $2,900)
