Ingredients and substitutions

You can find the full list of ingredients along with measurements in the recipe card below. These are my ingredient notes and recommendations for easy swaps and substitutions!

Tuna salad sometimes has a bad reputation for being unhealthy and loaded with unnecessary calories. But with a few careful choices of ingredients, it can be a wholesome, nutrient-dense meal!

Canned Tuna

The star of the show, canned tuna, is the protein-packed base of tuna salad. Look for tuna that is packed in water for a lean protein option.

Red Onion

Red onion adds a sharp and slightly sweet flavor. Finely chop the onion and mix it in well for a burst of flavor in every bite. White onion or green onion are great alternatives.

Celery

Celery adds a satisfying crunch. It can be omitted if you don’t like celery, though I would recommend substituting another crunchy veggie like radish or bell peppers for texture!

Parsley

We love the fresh and herbaceous flavor of parsley in tuna salad. Fresh dill is a great substitute.

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a classic ingredient in tuna salad, but not all mayonnaise is created equal! We love avocado oil mayonnaise for its healthy fats and lack of highly processed soy or canola oil. This is the store bought brand of mayonnaise I use, and this Homemade Avocado Oil Mayonnaise is a great option if you want to try making your own!

I give a range of measurements for mayonnaise in the recipe because how much you use is up to your personal preference.

Dijon Mustard

Dijon mustard adds a tangy and slightly spicy flavor to your tuna salad. Look for a Dijon mustard that is made with Whole30-compatible ingredients to keep this recipe Whole30. There are so many delicious types of mustard out there – feel free to play around with what you have on hand!

Lemon Juice or Red Wine Vinegar

A splash of acidity is essential to balance the other flavors. Use either fresh lemon juice or red wine vinegar to add a bright and tangy note to the dish.

Salt and Pepper

I always recommend seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Everyone’s preference is a little different, and the sodium content in your mayonnaise and tuna can effect the overall saltiness of the recipe.

What Kind of Canned Tuna is Best for Tuna Salad

When it comes to making tuna salad, choosing the right canned tuna is crucial for the recipe’s success.

For the best texture and flavor, opt for tuna canned in water rather than oil. Oil-packed tuna tends to be heavier, which can alter the salad’s texture and make it difficult to mix in other ingredients evenly.

Water-packed tuna will give your tuna salad a fresher taste.

Another factor to consider is the type of tuna you choose.

Albacore tuna has a milder flavor and firmer texture, making it a popular choice for tuna salad. However, it’s important to note that albacore typically contains higher levels of mercury compared to other types of tuna.

If you’re concerned about mercury levels, you can use skipjack or light tuna instead, which is lower in mercury and less expensive.

Consider Sustainability: When considering the sustainability of canned tuna, look for tuna that is labeled as “pole and line caught” or “dolphin safe.” These labels indicate that the tuna was caught using methods that are environmentally friendly and do not harm other marine life.

How to make tuna salad without mayo

As tasty as mayonnaise is, it’s not for everyone.

But you can still enjoy a delicious tuna salad without using mayo! Here are some alternatives to consider.

Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is a popular substitute for mayonnaise in tuna salad. It has a similar creamy texture and tangy flavor, making it a great replacement. Plus, it’s high in protein and lower in fat and calories compared to mayonnaise.

Avocado: If you’re a fan of avocado, you can use it to make a creamy tuna salad without mayo. Just mash up a ripe avocado and mix it with your tuna, along with a little bit of extra lemon juice. This will give your tuna salad a fresh, bright flavor that’s perfect for the warmer months!

Recipe variations

You can easily change the flavor of your tuna salad by experimenting with different seasonings and ingredients.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Try using different herbs like fresh dill, cilantro, chives, or basil.
  • Add some extra veggies for more nutrients and texture. Diced bell pepper, cucumbers, or cabbage would all be delicious!
  • Stir in some nuts or seeds for a lovely crunch.
  • Add a bit of sweetness by including some diced apples or grapes.
  • Perk up the flavor even more by throwing in some finely diced pickles, chopped capers, or jalapeño pepper.

What goes with tuna salad?

While absolutely delicious on its own, there are so many tasty and healthy options to pair tuna salad with.

  • For a light and refreshing meal, try serving your tuna salad with cucumber slices, cut carrots, or celery sticks or as a lettuce wrap.
  • If you prefer something heartier, consider serving it on top of a bed of mixed greens or spinach for a delicious salad, or on your favorite toasted bread as a sandwich.
  • And for a more filling option, you could add some sliced hard-boiled eggs or avocado.
  • It’s also delicious as a dip with crackers or chips!

Storage and freezing

How long will homemade tuna salad last in the fridge?

Making tuna salad ahead of time is a game-changer for busy schedules.

But how long can you keep it in the refrigerator before it goes bad?

If stored properly in an airtight container, homemade tuna salad can last in the refrigerator for up to four days. However, it is essential to use fresh ingredients and to ensure that the tuna salad has been properly refrigerated at all times.

Important note: If using avocado in your tuna salad or mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise, it’s best to eat it right away, as the avocado will start to turn brown the longer it sits.

Can you freeze tuna salad?

Yes, you can freeze tuna salad! However, you should keep in mind that the texture and taste may be affected once it’s thawed. The mayo in the tuna salad can separate and become watery, so it’s best to freeze it in an airtight container to minimize any air exposure. When you’re ready to use it, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight, give it a good stir to redistribute any separated ingredients, and add a little extra mayonnaise before serving if needed.
