Need advice

Hello,

I'm considering going with the Ameritech plan called "SpeedPath 1500 OfficePlus". It's currently $100 off per month! For $79.00 per month you get 5 static ip addresses and 1500/256 speeds. I have a few questions.

1) The rep told me the 256 up speed was not a hard requirement, it may actually go higher. Seems kind of necessary doesn't it? If you have 5 static ip's, it's kind of assumed you are running some servers?

2) Currently I have the linksys router with 4 port switch. How does this router work with 5 static ip's?

3) Is ppp0e finally gone with this plan?

thanks

If you're getting the 1500x256 profile, that is rate adaptive.

Downstream is 768 - 1.5
Upstream is 128 - 256.

PPPoE is alive and well. But, your linky should be able to handle that part for you. Your local network should only require basic IP on those boxes.

1.) I highly doubt you'll every go over 256 kbps due to PPPoE and TCP/IP overhead not to mention the caps placed in the Ameritech end.

2.)The Linksys will only use one of the static IPs. If you must have 5 static IPs, you'll have to purchase one that will handle all five. Here's a list of routers you can use that will handle the 5 IPs » »SBC/Ameritech 5 Static IP-Compatible Routers (update 05-19-06)

I get ~1300 down/~245 up on mine (1500 dynamic). There is one area in Michigan where they seem to have bulloxed something up on the profiles in the customer's favor, and some are getting ~350 up. Go figure.

As mentioned above, no Linksys (or SMC or DLink) SOHO gateway products will enable all 5 of your static IPs.

You can see the last 7 day's speedtest results here. Type in "ameritech.net" in the domain, and you can also sort by zip code (first three or all 5 digits).

Ok, am I to understand that ppp0e will still be used with this 5 static address plan? Does that mean each client computer will require ppp0e where it used to be done on my router?

One PPPoE client, running on the router, takes care of the whole subnet. It's the same setup you have now except that the Linksys is not able to route the other 4 IPs to your LAN (Multi-NAT). If you just left it as-is you'd have 1 static IP available, assigned to the WAN interface of the router, acting like your current dynamic IP.

You can either purchase a Multi-NAT capable router (see list behind link above) or roll your own with Linux. It maps each of the statics to one computer on your LAN, with one as a gateway (router) and two more as the network and broadcast addresses, for a total of 8.

Thanks. With my move to a new location, can anyone guess at what types of speeds I can expect at a distance of 11,500'? I just had phone service installed and told the tech I planned to have my dsl moved to this new address. he tested the line and said it was no good. They called the cable maintenance people out and spliced in a new line. Took them several hours at multiple poles etc.. They now tell me the line is clean whatever that means.

It's hard to tell as there are other factors that play a role in this.

I'd issue an edict of wait and see.
