What is a symbol in forex trading? ›

A currency symbol is a graphical representation of a currency's name, often used when referring to an amount of money. Currencies like the US dollar ($) and the British pound sterling (£) are immediately recognized throughout the world by their symbols.

The symbology for forex symbols is a six-character symbol consisting of two three-character pairs. The first three-characters is the base currency and the second three-character is the counter currency.

Others relate to the currencies of several countries, such as $ (dollar), which is used in the United States, Canada, Australia, and more. When this is the case, the symbol may include a country prefix, such as CA$ for Canadian dollars or AU$ for Australian dollars.

Usually, the first two letters define the name of the country and the last letter the name of the currency. For example, the United States Dollar is USD, the Great British Pound is GBP and the Japanese Yen is JPY.

Signals are ascertained after analysing the currency pair's historical price movements. Trading signals are like forex alerts that inform you whether you should short or long a trade based on different timeframes, prices and market conditions. However, trading signals do not mandate taking an order based on the signal.

Flags can be used to interpret large breaks in price. If the price breaks through the flag to the downside, there may be a large move down. Similarly, if the price breaks through the flag to the upside, there may be a large move up. We may use these to help identify trend or to confirm a Gartley or butterfly pattern.

Forex trading is the process of speculating on currency prices to potentially make a profit. Currencies are traded in pairs, so by exchanging one currency for another, a trader is predicting one currency will rise or fall in value against the other.

ISO 4217 also assigns a three-digit numeric code to each currency. This numeric code is usually the same as the numeric code assigned to the corresponding country by ISO 3166-1. For example, USD (United States dollar) has numeric code 840 which is also the ISO 3166-1 code for "US" (United States).

Forex quotes come in pairs with the currency name shortened to three letters. So, a deal ticket for the euro against the US dollar is described as EUR/USD, where the euro is the 'base currency' and the dollar is the 'quote'. We also touch on pips and leverage.
